The Industrial Design Program at Appalachian State University is a rising star in the North Carolina
educational system. A young program, it already boasts, 160 majors, 6 full time, and 4 part time faculty.
Students can chose from two areas of concentration; Furniture Design or Product Design. Both
concentrations focus on design inquiry, creative problem-solving, user research, social and
environmental concerns, and manufacturing requirements. Through industry collaborations and studio
projects, students are challenged to develop a comprehensive knowledge base allowing them to
compete professionally. The programs facilities consist of state of the art prototyping labs in wood,
metal, plastics and rapid prototyping. Student work has been recognized and shown at; ICFF, the Milan
Furniture Fair, Greener Gadgets finalists, Dwell® on Design, Designboom® Mart participants in
Copenhagen, High Point Furniture Market, ASFD Pinnacle award and the national Creative Juice
Completion sponsored by Google®.
